SAHAJA

SIMON CHOI

“One day he was walking on the river bank where women were washing clothes. By some chance there was a young girl whose name was Rami : she raised her eyes to his. There was a meeting of Dante and Beatrice. From this time on Chandidas was filled with love… She stood before him at the place of the reunion—never before had she looked upon his face so publicly—then he forgot every promise of reformation, and bowed before her with joined hands as a priest approaches his household goddess.”

This excerpt was taken from Ananda Coomaraswamy’s essay, “Sahaja”, in which he describes a priest named Chandidas who forsook everything he stood for in society because of one single encounter with his beloved Rami, a washerwoman. In fourteenth century India, a high standing priest such as Chandidas was strictly forbidden from associating with lowly washerwomen. Despite the risk of excommunication and even death, Chandidas commits to Rami, all because of one single look they share by the riverbank—the moment of recognition of Sahaja (i.e., co-emergent; spontaneously or naturally born together). The power of such romantic encounters is still evident in our lives today—we often abandon reason for love. I attempt to sonically express such romantic encounters in this mix. I’ve specifically mixed in songs that utilize chord progressions, ambience, and lyrics that, in my opinion, reflect such moments of “Sahaja.”
