letter from the collective
In our first conversations about this issue, we began with the idea of a day, of 24 hours and the subjectivity of time: What do we do with our minutes? What kind of moments make up our lives? What meaning lies in the many ways we encounter the world around us, and the many ways we encounter ourselves? But these questions are ubiquitous, and as with love and pain, it is often most difficult to capture that which is central to the human experience – emotions and concepts that feel at once urgent and elusive. Indeed, how do we express something so common it seems cliché?

In the past three months, our incredibly talented contributors have tackled this unwieldly task. Tucked into their art, their music and their writing are pieces of themselves, captured in strokes and notes and words. In these encounters are the before, during and after of the moments that really matter. In this issue, time itself has been dilated and condensed. Inside is an exploration and confrontation of the unpredictability of life; of resilience, disappointment and what pushes us to change. A child grows up too quickly. A woman reclaims love. Two friends try not to be strangers.
As we continue our celebration of artists on campus, of their voices and ideas, we are grateful for everyone who has kept this conversation alive. With great warmth and excitement, we welcome you inside, where we hope you will encounter both the familiar and the not, the beautiful and the painful, and everything in between.
